No. 7 Buffaloes Finish 3rd at Valley Center January Jam 2013-Audio

Valley Center, KS (www.westernkansasnews.com) – For the very first time since going to the Valley Center January Jam Mid-Season Basketball tournament back in the 90’s, the No. 7 Garden City Buffaloes boys finished 3rd on Saturday night, with a 45-41 victory over Wichita Northwest. Garden City had narrowly missed making it to the Championship game Friday night in an overtime loss to Olathe Northwest 63-52, as the Buffs had the ball with :11 seconds to go and could not the finish off the Ravens in regulation. The Buffaloes received a great game from senior Bo Banner who finished the night with 20 points and 7 boards, junior Hunter Delgado added 14 in the overtime loss. Coach Jacy Holloway comments in the post game show about the Buffs not be able to finish strong as they have throughout the season.

On Saturday night the No. 7 Buffaloes found a way to collect enough energy to defeat a tough and big Wichita Northwest team and finish strong hitting 8 of 10 free throws in the 4th quarter to seal the victory and place 3rd for the very first time in their ten plus years at the Valley Center January Jam. The Buffaloes received a balanced attack on the final day with only one player in double figures, with senior Bo Banner leading the way with 11 points, 9 from senior Austin Terpstra, junior point guard Tristan Nanninga added 7 points, 6 from sophomore post player Caleb Tramp and five each from juniors Emillo Parr and Hunter Delgado. The Buffs also out rebounded the much taller Grizlies 36 to 31 and had only 8 turnovers for the game. Coach Jacy Holloway comments about his players being resilient and determined to go 2-1 in the tournament.

HOLLOWAY GC BKB vs WICHITA NW POST GAME 2013

Blue Valley Northwest won their 3rd straight January Jam title with an 80-56 win over Olathe Northwest, 5th place went to Topeka Seaman after edging Kansas City Turner 54-47 and Junction City finished 7th with a 51-43 victory over the host team Valley Center. Garden City moves to 9-4 on the season with their 3rd place victory and will now look forward to their non-conference match-up at Ulysses on Tuesday in an 8:00 pm game. NOTE: The Valley Center January Jam always puts on a great show with the quality teams and their halftime performances, but they also allow the players to have some fun on the final day with a variety of Basketball contest, including Free Throw, Hot Shot, Three Point and Slam Dunk contests on Saturday morning. This year the Buffaloes had two players place 4th in a couple of catagories, including Evan Riggs placing 4th in the Free Throw contest and sophomore Caleb Tramp ended up 4th in the Slam Dunk competition.
