Holcomb, Scott City split Friday doubleheader
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Two GWAC rivals met up for the first time this season, as Scott City played host the the Holcomb Longhorns on Friday night at the Scott Community Events Center. It would end up a split of the doubleheader, as the Lady Longhorns used hot shooting to pick up a 73-55 victory, while the Beaver boys would put together one of the best wins of the year in a 56-43 win.

Holcomb would torch the nets early on and never looked back. The Lady Longhorns hit nine of their first 12 shots in the first quarter and built a 24-10 lead. In the first eight minutes, they used a 17-2 run over a four-minute stretch to build the lead. Scott City slowly answered back in the second frame, scoring the final seven points of the half to pull to within 29-21 at the break. The Lady Beavers scored the first basket of the second half to get to within six, but that would be as close as they would get the rest of the night. Holcomb (7-2) used a 12-4 run in the third quarter to lead by as many as 17, and took a 54-39 lead into the final stanza. Trailing 58-41, Scott City (4-5) scored the next eight point to get to 58-49 with 4:01 left. After that, it was all in the favor of the Lady Longhorns, as they closed the final 1:28 of the game on an 11-2 run to win 73-55.
Leading the way for Holcomb was Jera Kruleski with 25 points, while Halle Joned added 18 points and Kalyn King finished with 13. Scott City got 21 points from Brooke Strine and 18 from Erika Felker in the loss.
Holcomb now leads the series 33-27, and has won three straight in the series, the longest streak since 2014-15. The Lady Longhorns have won three straight in Scott City.

Holcomb would have the early leads, but the Beavers would take the lead late in the first quarter and never surrendered it. Scott City used a 9-3 run to lead 13-7 early in the second quarter, and then used a 12-3 run to lead 25-12 with 2:41 left before the break. The Longhorns scored the next six points to pull to within seven, before the Beavers closed out the half with three straight to lead 28-18 at intermission. As much action as there was in the first half, the third quarter would be quiet. Holcomb (6-3) used an 8-0 run in the third quarter to pull to within 31-27 with a minute left in the third frame. A Scott City (5-4) three extended the lead to seven heading into the fourth quarter, as they scored the first five points of the fourth period to lead by 12 in the first minute. After the Longhorns pulled to within 10, the Beavers scored five quick points to lead 44-29 with six minutes left. Holcomb would pull to within at least 10 points on several occasions in the final quarter, but the Beavers would close out the final 3:54 with 12 free throws and prevail 56-43.
Dylan Metzger led Scott City with 18 points, while Jackson Rumford added 15. Holcomb got 17 points off the bench from Korbin Johnson.
The win snapped Holcomb’s five-game winning streak in the series, and was Scott City’s first win at home and in the series since February 21, 2020. The Beavers lead the series 33-30.
