Beavers and Buffaloes split doubleheader Saturday
Garden City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Two teams a little over 30 miles apart met up Saturday evening inside The Garden in the Clarion Inn Roundball Classic. It was the third night for Scott City, while Garden City would be playing their second game of the classic. Saturday would see a split in the doubleheader, as the Lady Beavers rallied late to pick up a 36-34 win, while the Buffalo boys used a big third quarter to win 55-41.

Garden City started out with an early 6-0 lead midway through the first period, as both teams struggled early on. Scott City trailed 8-5 after the first period, and scored the first eight points of the second quarter to take a 13-8 lead with just over five minutes left in the half. The Lady Buffaloes would use the three ball to take the lead, as they scored the final six points of the half to take a 20-17 lead. All of their points in the second quarter were three pointers. Both teams struggled scoring in the second half, as Garden City (3-2) led 28-23 going into the final period. To open the fourth quarter, Scott City (3-1) scored the first five points in a 40-second span to tie the game at 28. Trailing 31-30, the Lady Beavers scored the next five points to lead 35-31 with 1:31 left. Scott City was unable to put away the Lady Buffs, who went on a scoring drought of nearly five and a half minutes in the final frame. A three pointer pulled Garden City to within 35-34 with 29.7 seconds left. The Lady Beavers would survive, hitting one of two free throws with 0.9 seconds left to take the 36-34 win.
Brooke Strine and Erika Felker each scored 16 points in the win, as they were the lone players that scored over the games final three quarters for Scott City. Garden City was led by Amaya Gallegos with 14 points.
With the win, it is the first time that Scott City has won three straight over Garden City, as the teams played in back to back seasons for the first time since 1988 and 1989.

For three of the four quarters, this game was played evenly. Scott City had the lead for a majority of the first half, and early of the second half. The Beavers took a 10-9 lead after the opening eight minutes, and went on a 12-3 run to begin the second period, as they led 22-12 with 2:31 remaining before the break. Garden City used the three-ball to work themselves back into the game, including two in the final 30 seconds that pulled them to within 24-21 at halftime. Their last one came on a 40-foot shot by Emilio Zundt. The third quarter was a period dominated by the Buffaloes, as they used a 19-4 run in that frame to lead 40-28 going into the fourth stanza. Scott City (3-1) would have a five-minute scoreless drought in the second half that saw Garden City (5-0) score 14 straight points, as they would have a 20-2 run over a seven-minute span. The Buffaloes expanded their lead to 55-38 late in the game, before winning 55-41.
Leading the way for Garden City was Jace Steinmetz with 27 points, while Scott City got a career-high 11 points from Avry Noll.
It’s the third straight win in the series for the Buffaloes, as it was the first meeting since 2019.
