Demons swept by Manhattan on 1st day of Cowboy Capital Classic
DODGE CITY–Manhattan’s boys pulled away from Dodge City in the second half Friday for a 59-32 win, and the Lady Demons were haunted by the fourth quarter again in a 37-32 loss at the Civic Center.
In the boys game, Manhattan burst out of the gate on an 8-0 run, but Dodge City’s defense recovered and was able to slow down the Indians the rest of the first half while slowly crawling back in. The Red Demons trailed 23-20 at the break.
The third quarter proved to be decisive, with Manhattan outscoring Dodge 17-6 and continued to pull away in the fourth. Dodge City turned the ball over 19 times in the game, which was a theme last Thursday at McPherson as well.
No Demons reached double figures, but Jaiden Springer led the team with nine points on 3-for-5 from distance. The rest of the team was a combined 1-for-15 from behind the arc.
The Red Demons fall to 0-2 with the loss and return to action Saturday when they take on Junction City at the Dodge City Civic Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CT.
In the much-tighter girls game, Dodge City was the team with the fast start, outscoring Manhattan 8-1 in the first quarter. But the Lady Indians knocked down five threes in the second quarter against Dodge City’s zone, and that was enough to spark them to take the lead, which they never surrendered again.
The Lady Demons were able to climb back to a 25-25 tie early in the fourth quarter, but Manhattan promptly went on a 9-0 run to seal the win.
Only three Lady Demons scored in the contest, led by Becca Unruh, who had 14 points and a team-high six rebounds. Easha Potts chipped in 10 and Cait Pfaff added eight.
The Lady Demons fall to 0-2 with the loss and return to action Saturday when they take on Junction City at the Dodge City Civic Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT.
