Conqs sweep Broncbusters

GARDEN CITY–Dodge City’s men fended off Garden City 96-88 Saturday, and the Conq women built a 19-point halftime lead and held on late 75-68 in a doubleheader at Conestoga Arena.
In the men’s game, Dodge City’s offense was clinical, shooting nearly 49% from the floor and an above-average 10-for-20 from behind the arc. They also committed a season-low six turnovers.
Jason Edwards led the Conqs with 21 points. He was helped out by Chris Robinson, who scored 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting and tallied seven assists.
The Conqs held a 22-point advantage with 11:17 to play in the second half, but Garden City trimmed that to six with 50 seconds left. Two free throws by Dodge City’s Robinson put the game on ice.
Four Broncbusters notched double-doubles, including DaJion Humphrey with 25 points and 10 rebounds, Buru Naivalurua with 20 points and 12 rebounds, Jaborri McGhee with 17 points and 10 assists, and Aundre Polk with 14 points and 10 rebounds. But depth was an issue again, and Garden City only got five points from their bench.
Dodge City turned 18 Broncbuster turnovers into 25 points.
Saturday’s win marked the ninth consecutive win for the Conqs.
The No. 10 Conquistadors improve to 9-1 (5-0 KJCCC) with the win and return to action Wednesday when they travel to Butler. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT.
The Broncbusters fall to 7-3 (2-3 KJCCC) with the loss and return to action Wednesday when they travel to Seward County. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. CT.
In the women’s game, Dodge City led wire-to-wire, taking a commanding 46-27 lead at the end of the first half and holding the lead from there. The Conqs scored 33 points off of 24 Broncobuster turnovers, something that has become a common theme under third-year Dodge coach Landon Steele.
Balance was on full display for Dodge City, with four players reaching double figures, highlighted by Jenna Rose Mafua’s 15 points. Shakara Anderson had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Dayshawna Carter and Jae’Mya Lyons impressed for Garden City, scoring 27 and 20 points respectively.
The Conquistadors improve to 9-2 (4-1 KJCCC) with the win and return to action Wednesday when they travel to No. 22 Butler. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CT.
The Broncbusters fall to 5-6 (1-4 KJCCC) with the loss and return to action Wednesday when they travel to Seward County. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
