Scott City swept at home on Thursday

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Scott City has been playing without their original lineup since the first weekend of the season. Thursday’s home finale saw three starters out due to injuries, including two of those being seniors, as they played host to Colby and Goodland in GWAC play at the Scott Community Events Center. The Lady Beavers fought hard, but fell short to the Lady Eagles 25-22, 25-21 in the finale, and they started off falling to the Cowgirls 25-18, 25-11. Goodland would defeat Colby in the middle match of the triangular 25-16, 25-14.

In their first match of the afternoon, Scott City played scrappy, and hung with the No. 6 ranked team in Class 3A, according to the Kansas Volleyball association. While the Cowgirls led early, the Lady Beavers would hang tough early, trailing by no more than three points. Scott City would rally for four of the next five points to take a 16-15 lead. Goodland would rally for seven straight points, and 10 of the final 12 points, to take the opening set 25-18. The Cowgirls began the second set on a tear, taking a 10-1 lead, and never looked back. Scott City was only able to put together a run late with three straight, but the damage was already done. Goodland took the second set 25-11, and won the match 25-18, 25-11. Megan Trout had three kills and one block point. Dayanara Castillo had four kills in the match.

Heading into the final match, Scott City would meet up with Colby for the fourth time this season, and for the second time in six days. The Lady Beavers would take early leads, but Colby pulled away toward the late stages of the opening set, leading 20-14. Scott City rallied to inch to within 23-22, but the Lady Eagles picked up the final two points to take the opening set 25-22. There would be seven ties and three lead changes in the second set. The Lady Eagles would use a run of 5-1 to take a 14-10 lead midway through the second set. Scott City found way to rally, and took a 17-15 lead. Leading 18-16, the Lady Beavers couldn’t extend their lead, only to see Colby come out with seven of the next eight points to pull ahead 23-19. Both teams traded points at the end, as the Lady Eagles prevailed 25-21 to take the match 25-22, 25-21. Megan Trout had seven kills and two blocks, while Crissa Irvin added three kills and a service ace.

Scott City will return to the court on Tuesday, as they will face Cimarron and Meade in a triangular in Cimarron.
