Great Bend mounts 4th quarter comeback, spoils Dodge City’s senior night with OT win

DODGE CITY–Great Bend scored the game’s final 21 points Friday, capped off by an overtime touchdown catch by Colton Brack and then a defensive stand, ruining Dodge City’s senior night with a 21-14 overtime win at Memorial Stadium.

Great Bend trailed 14-0 at the start of the fourth quarter, but quickly narrowed the margin with a nine yard run by Cody Miller. After a snappy Dodge City three-and-out, the Panthers drove again and tied it with a Colton Brack touchdown, his first of two on the night.

The Red Demons couldn’t sustain a drive to win the game, despite crossing into Great Bend territory with less than a minute left in regulation. That drive sputtered on the 34 yard line, effectively sending the game to overtime.

The Panthers opened the extra period’s scoring with a 12-yard third-and-goal touchdown pass from Cayden Scheuerman to Brack, who tiptoed inside the pylon to make the eventual game-winning grab.

Dodge had one final effort, but after a bad snap set the Red Demons behind the chains, a desperation heave from Kaden Garvalena went out the back of the end zone, securing Great Bend’s third straight victory.

The Red Demons gained 213 yards on the ground, led by Daelyn Unzueta’s 108-yard performance.

Great Bend’s Scheuerman completed 19-of-26 passes for 154 and two touchdowns, both to Brack.

Garvalena did not play in the first half for Dodge City, a decision made by the coaching staff prior to the game.

Dodge City falls to 3-2 with the loss and drops to 1-1 in WAC play.

The Red Demons return to action next Friday when they travel to Hays. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.
