Scott City heads to Wray for out of state test

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Two tradition-rich schools in football from two states will meet up in Wray, Colorado tonight, as the Scott City Beavers will make the 187-mile trip to Wray to face the Eagles, in what is the first of three straight road games for Scott City. 

The Beavers played with a lot of fire and emotion in their lone quarter of play last Friday night at Darner Field, defeating Cimarron 42-0 in a game that was called with 46.1 seconds left in the first period, due to lightning. That came after a lengthy delay. Scott City scored on all six possessions, and snapped the ball twice in their own territory in the win. The Beavers rolled up 176 yards of offense, and the defense forced two turnovers and held the Bluejays to minus-12 yards of offense, all on the ground. 

Wray will be at home for a second consecutive game, as they rallied from a 16-14 third quarter deficit to defeat GWAC member Goodland 36-16 last Friday night at Powell Field. The Eagles enter the game with a 2-0 record, after defeating Highland 46-0 on the road in Ault, Colo. to begin the season. They enter tonight’s game ranked No. 2 in Class 1A in Colorado. Wray has 10 seniors on their roster, nine start, and they have averaged 41 points and 336 yards of offense in a balanced attack through their first two games. They’ve given up 133 yards and eight points on average through the first two games. Goodland had 223 yards of offense, with 136 coming on the ground last week. 

This is Scott City’s first trip to Wray since 1994, when they defeated the Eagles 28-8. The Beavers will be playing Wray for the third time, as they fell 21-0 at home the following year. It is the first out of state and Colorado opponent for Scott City since 2005, when they defeated Crowley County. 

Scott City is 8-1 all-time against the Centennial State, and Wray is 5-5 against schools from Kansas since 2010.
