First GCCC STEM summer camp sees success for area students
Garden City, Kan (WesternKansasNews.Com) – Garden City Community College hosted the first Title V STEM summer camp for area students on July 19-21. The camp, “Icarus Rising – The Science of Drones”, featured three days of hands-on learning about drone technology for area middle and high school students.
During the camp, students learned drone-related information including aerodynamics, structure, applications of drones, sketch designs, and more. The students flew drones through an obstacle course challenge and watched a drone demonstration from special guest, Nathan Howard, Assistant Professor of Applied Technology at Fort Hays State University. They also learned various methods of coding and the inner workings of drones from Yuriy Drubiniskiy, Camp Lead, and GCCC Robotics Instructor.
The Title V STEM program activities are through a $5 million grant from the Department of Education. This grant, awarded in September 2021, will allow for expanded Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) instruction, the development of three new programs (Cybersecurity, Robotics, and Crop Production), summer programs hosted on
campus, and the addition of a STEM Success Center at GCCC.
