Cimarron’s Harrison earns West MVP honors in 49th Kansas Shrine Bowl that ends in a tie

Pittsburg, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The 49th Annual Kansas Shrine Bowl saw three southwest Kansas athletes make an impact in the game on Saturday at Carnie Smith Stadium in Pittsburg. A defensive slugfest would produce the second-ever tie in Shrine Bowl history, as Emmanuel Aguilar’s 23-yard field goal in the final minute rallied the West team to tie the game at 10. The 10-10 tie was the first tie since 2001.
Taking advantage of the East’s second turnover, the West scored on a 10-yard run by Sedgwick’s Lance Hoffsomer in the first quarter gave the West the early 7-0 lead, with the Aguilar PAT.
That was the score until the third quarter, when a high snap in punt formation by the West saw Aguilar kick the ball out of the end zone, which made the score 7-2. 
In the fourth quarter, the East put together their lone scoring drive to take the lead, when Basehor-Linwood’s Zach Sisemore scored from seven yards out to put the east ahead for the first time at 8-7 with 7:08 left. They would line up in the swinging gate for the two-point conversion, as Lawrence’s Truman Juelsgaard would run it in to push the East lead to 10-7. 
The West would be stuffed on fourth down, and the East saw their drive near midfield halted on fourth down as well. On their final drive, the West would march down deep into East territory, when Aguilar drilled the 23-yard field goal with 23 seconds remaining to tie the game at 10.
Garden City’s Terrell Elliot was a factor up front in the West’s 3-3-5 defensive scheme, and delivered a big tackle on a fourth down stop early in the game. Cimarron’s Braxton Harrison played safety for the West team, and was involved in several tackles, which earned him MVP honors for the West. 
Harrison is the fifth player from southwest Kansas to earn the West MVP honor in the last nine years.
