Wet weather, fast driving leads to accident in Garden City

On May 4, 2022, at 4:40 P.M., Officers of the Garden City Police Department, Garden City Fire Department, and Finney County EMS were dispatched to the intersection of Campus Drive and E. Kansas Avenue for an accident where a vehicle struck a traffic light pole.

Upon arrival, Officers observed a BMW 328XI with extensive front-end damage, up against the traffic light on the northeast corner of the intersection and blocking traffic on E. Kansas Avenue.

The investigation revealed the driver, identified as Jonathan Reyes (23), Garden City, KS, was traveling westbound on in the 2000 block of E. Kansas Avenue and attempted to turn northbound. Reyes was driving too fast for the wet road conditions, which caused the vehicle to continue straight when he attempted to turn and resulted in him colliding with the light pole. Reyes was not injured from the incident

Traffic at the intersection was diverted from the area for nearly one hour as the BMW was towed from the scene. The total estimated damage to the light pole is less than $500.00.
