Lady Beaver softball takes two from Colby
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Despite very windy conditions, Scott City played host to Colby on Tuesday afternoon to open up their home slate against the Lady Eagles in GWAC play. Even though both teams had opposite looking records, both games would be close, as Colby pushed the Lady Beavers in both games. Scott City would have enough on the board, as they completed a doubleheader sweep with wins of 4-3 and 11-6.
Scott City 4, Colby 3, Game 1
Colby scored first in the top of the first, when Nessa Cheney scored on a throwing error by the Lady Beavers to give the Lady Eagles the early 1-0 advantage. Scott City rallied with three runs in the bottom of the first, highlighted by a Mackayla Miller RBI single that gave the Lady Beavers a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the third, Hannah Tucker grounded into a fielder’s choice that scored Cheyenne Cramer that pushed the lead to 4-1. Colby would rally with two runs in the top of the sixth, on a Cheney RBI single and a Jalyn Sabatka triple to pull to within 4-3 with no outs. Sabatka would get picked off, followed by a strikeout and a ground out would end the threat from the Lady Eagles. Colby had the tying run aboard in the top of the seventh with one out, but a caught stealing and a groundout would end the game, giving Scott City the 4-3 win.
Cheyenne Cramer gave up three runs, two earned, on six hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings of work for the win. The Lady Beavers had only three hits, and took advantage of three Eagle errors. Nessa Cheney took the loss, giving up four runs, three earned, on three hits in six innings of work. Shaili Showalter had three hits, as Colby had six hits in the game.
Scott City 11, Colby 6, Game 2
The Lady Beavers jumped out early in game two with a 3-0 lead in the first inning, thanks to a RBI single by Cheyenne Cramer, and Mackayla Miller’s two-run single. Following a scoreless second inning, Colby got on the board in the third inning on a RBI double by Nessa Cheney. Scott City got two runs back in the bottom of the frame on a Tori Ford single that scored Malorie Cupp and a Rhiley Stoppel RBI double, scoring courtesy runner Madison Miller. The Lady Eeagles would storm back with five runs in the top of the fourth inning, scoring four runs with two outs, to take a 6-5 lead. A Sabatka two run single and a Cheney two-RBI double put Colby up 6-5. The Lady Beavers bounced back scoring the games final six runs. They started on a Cupp RBI double and a Cramer RBI single that scored Cupp to go up 7-6 heading into the fifth inning. Scott City scored two more in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run single by Melany Duff, and put up two more in the sixth on RBI singles from Stoppel and Hannah Tucker. Colby made things interesting in their final at bat by taking advantage of a two out walk and two errors, but a ground out ended the game, as the Lady Beavers took the finale 11-6.
Scott City hit the ball better in game two, pounding out 14 hits. Mackayla Miller had three hits and two RBI, and Cheyenne Cramer, Rhiley Stoppel and Melany Duff each had two RBI’s in the win to go along with two hits. Cramer gave up six runs, five earned, on six hits with three strikeouts for the win. Colby got three RBI from Nessa Cheney and two from Jalyssa Sabatka. Emma Curry went six innings in the circle, giving up 11 runs, eight earned, on 14 hits with four strikeouts.
Scott City improved to 8-0 on the year, 6-0 in GWAC play, and will host Cimarron next Tuesday. Colby dropped to 1-5 overall, 1-3 in league play, as they will travel to Hugoton next Tuesday.
