Scott City baseball sweeps Lakin
Lakin, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In a doubleheader that was pushed back 24 hours due to high winds, Scott City visited Lakin for the first time since 2018 on Friday afternoon for a doubleheader. It would be a doubleheader that the Beavers would dominate, winning 23-1 and 16-3 for their first doubleheader sweep of the season.
Scott City 23, Lakin 1, Game 1 (3 Inn.)
Scott City would put the pressure on early, scoring eight runs before Lakin would have an at bat. It all started when Aaron Ruelas doubled in Brady Welker for the early 1-0 lead, followed by a Lawson Bailey triple to make it 2-0. Later in the top of the inning, Welker would have a two-run triple to make it 7-0. the Beavers put up eight first inning runs. Lakin answered on a RBI sacrifice fly from Adrik Gomez that scored Allen Martinez. Scott City added eight more runs in the second, all coming with two runs, as Eloy Ruelas had a two-run double, a Welker two-run single and a Bailey three-run triple. Welker added a RBI triple in the third inning, that saw the Beavers tack on seven more runs.
JP Harris gave up a run on two hits with three strikeouts in three innings of relief for the win. Brady Welker had three hits and six RBI, while Lawson Bailey had two hits and four RBI and Eloy Ruelas had three RBI in the win. Allen Martinez had both hits and a run scored in the loss for the Broncs. Bode McCormick took the loss giving up six runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning pitched.
Scott City 16, Lakin 3, Game 2 (4 Inn.)
The nightcap would be a game that would be dominated by the Beavers. Scott City scored three runs in the opening inning, after an error plated two runs to get the scoring started. The Beavers added four more in the second frame, all coming with two outs. Brady Welker hit the teams first home run of the year on a solo shot, followed by a JP Harris triple, a Lawson Bailey double and an Evan Fry double to make it 7-0. Both teams went scoreless in the third, and Scott City put the game away with seven runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Lakin took advantage of errors by the Beavers in the bottom of the fifth, when they scored their three runs.
Brady Welker went four and two-thirds innings on the mound, giving up three unearned runs on one hit and six strikeouts. Lawson Bailey had two hits and drove in four urns, while Aaron Ruelas and JP Harris had three hits each. Braden Fisher and Grant Mendenhall each drove in a run for Lakin. Allen Martinez went two innings, allowing seven runs, five earned, on seven hits with four strikeouts, as he took the loss.
Both teams closed out Friday with 4-4 records on the season. Scott City visits Colby on Tuesday, while Lakin will head to Elkhart on Monday.
