Holcomb girls fall to Hugoton in sub-state semi-final

Kingman, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Holcomb Lady Longhorns fell short in round two of sub-state and lost to Hugoton 50-38.
Holcomb jumped out to a 4-0 lead with just over six minutes left in the first quarter. The Lady Longhorn defense did not allow a field goal for the first five minutes of the game, but would only lead 7-3 with three minutes left in the first quarter. Hugoton closed the quarter on a 9-4 run and had a lead going into the second quarter 12-11. Jera Kruleski sat the final four minutes of the first quarter with two fouls. Kruleski had all seven points for the Lady Longhorns in the second quarter. Holcomb would be down 21-18 at halftime, Summya Addigun had 18 points in the first half for Hugoton. Holcomb came out in the third frame with good defense and would not allow a field goal for the first five minutes. The Lady Longhorns got within two points at 22-20 with 5:30 left in the third quarter. They would not score again until the final second and down 30-22 going into the fourth quarter. Holcomb did not quit, as they traded punches in the fourth with the Lady Eagles, but could not make enough stops. Halle Jones hit three, threes in the final frame for the Longhorns, but it would not be enough. The Lady Longhorns fell to Hugoton 50-38.
Hugoton shot 11/27 from two-point, 5/15 from three-point (4/4 in the second half), and 13/23 from the free throw line. Hugoton had 25 rebounds, 10 of those were offensive rebounds. They had nine turnovers. Hugoton was led by Mikyn Hamlin with 11 points and seven rebounds, Gianna Vos with 12 points, and Summya Addigun with 22 points and nine rebounds.
Holcomb shot 8/21 from two-point, 5/12 from three-point, and 7/9 from the free throw line. The Lady Longhorns had 18 rebounds, two of those were offensive rebounds, and had 13 turnovers.
Holcomb was led by Nicole Ruda with four points and four rebounds, Halle Jones had 14 points off four three-pointers, and Jera Kruleski had 16 points.
The Lady Longhorns end the year at 12-10 on the season.
