Bluejays and Beavers split Tuesday doubleheader

Cimarron, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Coming off three games last week, Cimarron played host to Scott City on Tuesday night at Cimarron High School in a battle of GWAC teams. While the games did not count toward the league standings, the night would see a split in a doubleheader. The Lady Bluejays would rally in the final quarter to take a 52-40 win, while the Beaver boys pull away for a 63-40 victory.

In a battle of 4-0 teams, there would be two big runs in the game. Cimarron controlled the opening eight minutes, and took an 11-5 lead into the second frame. The Lady Bluejays would lead in the first minute 16-5, and after a Scott City timeout, the Lady Beavers would go on a solid run. A 16-3 run in the final 6:57 of the first half gave the Lady Beavers their first lead of the night at 21-19 at the break. They held Cimarron without a point for a little over five minutes, and built a 24-19 lead early in the second half. Scott City led 33-27 late in the third period, before the Lady Bluejays pulled to within 35-31 going into the fourth quarter. It would be a 37-32 Lady Beaver lead with 6:51 left, when Cimarron went on a tear. They forced nine Scott City fourth quarter turnovers, and scored the games next 20 points to lead 52-37 with 2:08 left. The Lady Beavers went 6:38 without points, before scoring the games final three points to make the final 52-40 for the No. 7 ranked team in Class 3A.

McKayla Miller led Cimarron with 16 points, while Melody Carter added 10. Scott City got a 17-point performance from Erika Felker, which tied a career-high, and Amber Latta finished with 11.

Cimarron has won four straight in the series, which is the longest since their run from 2012-16. The Lady Bluejays lead the series 14-9.

Scott City Boys 63, Cimarron 40
Cimarron had the early 3-0 lead, and that would be their lone lead of the night. Scott City put up nine straight and never trailed. After the Bluejays pulled to within 9-8 midway through the opening frame, the Beavers closed out the first quarter on a 16-6 run to lead 25-14 after the first quarter. Trailing 28-14 early in the second stanza, Cimarron scored seven straight to get to within 28-21 at the midway point of the second quarter. Scott City ended their five-minute drought, scoring the final four points of the half to lead at the break 32-21. In the second half, the Bluejays couldn’t get any closer than nine points. Leading 36-27, the Beavers closed out the final 4:32 of the third quarter on a 17-3 run to build a 23-point lead at 53-30 heading into the final period. They would lead by that margin three times in the second half, and while Cimarron pulled to within 55-38, Scott City would score eight of the games final 10 points to snap a three-game losing streak with a 63-40 win.

Ten out of 11 Scott City players scored, led by Dylan Metzger with a career-high 14 points, while Austin Thon also had a career-best 13 points, and Ronnie Weathers added 11. Luke Janzen led Cimarron with 11 points.

After hitting 10 three-pointers through the first four games, the Beavers connected on nine on Tuesday, and eclipsed the 60-point total for the first time in two seasons. Scott City leads the series with the Bluejays since 2005 16-1.
