Holcomb rallies late to defeat Scott City

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–If there was any indication that Friday’s regional championship game between Holcomb and Scott City would come down to the late innings, look no further than the semi finals on Thursday night. The Lady Longhorns rallied to force extra innings against Colby, and walked-off with a 16-15 win in 10 innings. On the other side, the Lady Beavers scored seven in their final at bat to stun Cimarron 9-8.

Friday would see late inning drama for a trip to the state tournament on the line. Scott City would lead throughout, only to see Holcomb rally to knock off the Lady Beavers 6-5.

Scott City led early on, pulling out to an early 2-0 lead, and led 5-1 after three innings. Holcomb would chip away with a run in the fourth and two in the fifth to pull to within 5-4. The Lady Longhorns would grab the lead with two outs in the top of the seventh to lead for the first time 6-5, and hung on for the victory.

Both schools were looking for their first-ever trip to the state tournament. Holcomb improves to 20-3 on the year and will be playing in the Class 3A State Tournament at Twin Oaks Complex in Manhattan on Thursday and Friday, May 27 & 28. Scott City ends their season at 20-3, which is their best record in school history.
