Craig Schlott of Garden City was recently recognized for 20 years of service to KDOT and southwest Kansas.
Schlott has always been interested in bridges and roads and he’s always enjoyed being outdoors, so civil engineering was an easy career choice for him. After attending Colorado School of Mines, Schlott knew he wanted to be close to his family and friends in Colorado and he wanted time to hunt, fish, camp and enjoy the outdoors.
KDOT offered both. Schlott joined KDOT’s Garden City Construction Office as an Engineering Associate in 2000 and was promoted to Engineering Associate II in 2001, to Engineering Associate III in 2006, and to Construction Engineer in 2014.
As Construction Engineer, Schlott is responsible for leading the inspection, testing and administration of KDOT construction projects in District Six’s Area One. He says he especially enjoys working on large projects, like the U.S. 50 and U.S. 83 expansions in Finney County and the Garden City bypass resurfacing. He has earned three safety awards, five Kansas Contractor’s Association Partnering Awards, two Kansas Asphalt Paving Association awards and two American Concrete Paving Association awards.
Growing up in Lamar, Colorado, Schlott is natural outdoorsman who enjoys hunting, fishing, camping and occasionally four wheeling. He says, “KDOT offers the life-work balance I want with limited travel and few weekends. I have time for the outdoor activities I enjoy.”
KDOT urges all motorists to be alert and obey the warning signs when approaching and driving through a work zone. For more road condition details, check KDOT’s updated traveler information website, www.Kandrive.org.
