Scott City hosts Concordia in playoff opener

Scott City, Kan. Wwesternkansasnews.com)—For the fifth straight season, Scott City will face Concordia on the gridiron. Tonight’s 7 pm kickoff will be the second consecutive time the teams will face off in the playoffs. 

Concordia enter’s tonight’s playoff game with a 5-3 record, and finished third place in Class 3A, District 5, after a 41-28 win over Chapman last Friday night at home to snap a two-game losing streak. The Panthers trailed 14-0 in the first quarter, and 22-13 at the break, before outscoring the Irish 28-6 in the second half to pick up the win. Concordia put up 474 yards of offense, including 490 on the ground, and allowed 381 yards of offense, with 267 of those yards on the ground. This year, the Panthers have averaged 401 yards and 32 points per contest, while allowing 23 points and just under 300 yards a game. 

Scott City saw their four-game winning streak come to an end last Friday night, as they lost to Southeast of Saline on the road 40-6 in the district championship game, to finish second in District 6. Southeast led 16-0 after the opening quarter and 24-0 at the break. The Trojans scored the first 16 points of the half, before the Beavers tacked on their lone score of the night late in the third quarter. Scott City was outgained 328-156 in the contest, and had a season-low 31 yards rushing in the game. Through eight games, the Beavers are averaging 18 points and just under 300 yards a game, while giving up 14 points and 200 yards a contest. 

Scott City leads the series 5-0, as they won both contests in Scott City against the Panthers 31-0 and 28-0 last season. The last game was in the regional round of the Class 3A playoffs.

This will be Concordia’s 16th playoff appearance all-time and they have a 9-14 record, while Scott City is entering the playoffs for the 26th consecutive time, carry a 52-21 record. 

The winner of tonight’s game will face either Riley County or Smoky Valley next week in the regional round.
