Scott City sweeps home triangular
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–After last Thursday’s home triangular, Scott City was not happy with their play, despite going 1-1 on the day. Monday, they also went 1-1 at Goodland, but felt better with their efforts. On Thursday in their third triangular of the month, the Beavers would avenge of their losses from last week, and put together back to back wins, as they knocked off Hoxie 25-23, 17-25, 25-23, and in the finale, defeated Colby 27-25, 23-25, 25-15. Colby would sweep Hoxie in the other match of the day 26-24, 26-24.
Against Hoxie, the Lady Beavers started off leading 6-1, and 8-3, before a 5-1 Lady Indian rally pulled them to within 9-8. Scott City would go back up 14-9, but Hoxie would make another run. Trailing 16-12, a 6-2 run tied the set at 18, and the Lady Indians would take the lead with four straight at 22-21. The Lady Beavers would score four of the final five points to take the opening set 25-23. While Scott City scored the first point of the second set, it would be the Lady Indians would would jump out big. They scored the next nine points to lead 9-1, and would lead by as many as 10 with the last coming at 20-10. Hoxie would coast to the 25-17 win to force a third set. In the last set, the Lady Indians scored 10 straight to go up 13-3. It looked as if Hoxie was going to blow the doors open in that final set up 16-7, when Scott City got their attack going, with six kills and an ace as part of their nine unanswered to tie the third set up at 16. The Lady Indians would go up 23-20 late in the match, when the Lady Beavers found one more run in them, and close the match with five straight to take a 25-23 win. Kennedy Holstein had five kills and two service aces in the win, while Ella Rumford and Brooke Hoeme added four kills. There were 10 ties and five lead changes in the match.
In the finale against Colby, the Lady Beavers would trail for a majority of the first two sets. The opening set saw the Lady Eagles go early on to a 6-1 lead. Colby would be unable to lead by more than five points in the opening set. Scott City cut it to 10-9, before a 5-1 run pushed the Lady Eagle lead to 15-10. When it looked like the Lady Eagles were in prime position to take the first set up 22-18, the Lady Beavers had a rally in them. They would use a 6-1 run to get set point at 24-23, only to see Colby score two straight for set point at 25-24. Scott City closed the first set with three straight to take a 27-25 thriller. The Lady Beavers opened the second set with the first point, only to see the Lady Eagles go in an 8-2 run to lead 8-3. Colby would lead the rest of the way, and go up by their largest lead of the set at 20-14. But Scott City would find their way back in, with a 9-3 run to tie the second set at 23. The Lady Eagles would get the final points to force a third set with a 25-23 win. Both teams would be tied on the first four points of the third and final set. Scott City would make their first run to lead 9-4 with five straight points. Colby would make a counter with a 5-1 run to get to within 10-9. That was the closest they got the rest of the night. The Lady Beavers went on an 8-0 run and built a 17-9 lead, and gradually pulled away to take the third set and the match at 25-15. Ella Rumford had seven kills and Kennedy Holstein had five kills, while Abby McDaniel had three service aces for Scott City.
The Lady Beavers are now 9-5 on the season, and will play four days next week, starting with a dual at Phillipsburg on Monday, at Liberal for a dual on Tuesday, a GWAC Triangular at Cimarron on Thursday and a home triangular on Saturday, September 26.
