Injury Accident – GCPD Media Release
Garden City Police Department
On September 15, 2020, at 4:40 P.M., Officers of the Garden City Police Department, Garden City Fire Department, and Finney County Emergency Medical Services were dispatched to the intersection of 7th Street and Walnut Street for a reported injury accident. Officers were notified that a car struck a tree.
When officers arrived, they located a Chevrolet Cruze on the south curb of Walnut Street, wedged in a tree with extensive front-end damage. Officers found the driver, identified as Delano Davis (35), Garden City, KS, on the curbside, and the passenger, Antonette Davis
(33), Garden City, KS, seated in the vehicle. Both occupants were waiting for an evaluation from medical services.
The investigation revealed Delano Davis was traveling eastbound on Walnut Street. Mr.
Davis was allegedly smoking a cigarette when some of the lit ash fell into the driver’s seat.
Mr. Davis allegedly lifted himself off the driver’s seat to prevent himself from being burned but lost control of the vehicle. Mr. Davis attempted to press on the brakes to stop the car but instead pushed on the gas pedal, causing the car to accelerate as he drove onto the curb and collided with the tree.
Mr. Davis was transported to St. Catherine Hospital for further evaluation. Both occupants
sustained minor injuries and were wearing their seatbelts.
