Scott City goes 1-1 at Goodland triangular

Goodland, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Scott City Lady Beaver volleyball team hit the road on Monday for a triangular in Goodland against the Cowgirls and Lakin. Scott City would go 1-1 on the day, defeating Lakin in their first match 25-19, 25-18, and fell to Goodland 25-15, 25-23. Lakin defeated Goodland in the other match 25-23, 18-25, 25-23.

In Scott City’s first match of the day, the Lady Beavers attacked early and often, jumping out to a 9-1 lead. However, Lakin would find a groove and use a 12-3 run to take their first lead at 13-12 midway through the opening set. The Lady Beavers would settle down and scored four straight, and pulled away for the 25-19 first set win. They had 11 kills out of their 25 points.  Scott City would open up with a 4-1 lead to begin the second set. The Lady Broncs would never lead, as the Lady Beavers pulled away midway through the second set with a 6-1 run to go up 17-11. Scott City closed the set and match with three of the final five points to win 25-18. Paige Vulgamore and Ella Rumford had six kills apiece, while Brooklynne Zielke added five, and Kennedy Holstein added four kills. 

It would be quick turnaround, as the Lady Beavers faced Goodland. The Cowgirls would jump out early, using a solid attack to build a 9-1 lead. Scott City was never able to get a run until late in the first set, when they had a 4-0 run to pull to within 22-12. Both teams would trade points and the Cowgirls won the first set 25-15. Scott City led for a good portion of the second set, taking advantage of Goodland hitting errors. The Lady Beavers would jump out to a 13-8 lead, and after a Cowgirl timeout, saw Goodland use an 11-13 run to lead 18-16. Scott City would battle back after trailing 23-20 to tie the second set up at 23, before the Cowgirls close the match out with the final two points to win 25-23. Paige Vulgamore had three kills and Ella Rumford added two for Scott City, as they had three service aces in the match.

Scott City is 7-5 on the season, and will host Colby and Hoxie in a triangular on Thursday at the Scott Community Event Center.
