Scott City splits matches in home triangular

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–For the first time, the Scott City Lady Beaver volleyball team was able to compete in the new Scott Community Events Center, as they faced two Mid-Continent League teams in Hill City and Hoxie. The first home competition of the season would also see each match go three sets. It would also see all three teams leave with one win. 

Scott City would win a thriller over Hill City to open the day 25-23, 24-26 and 26-24, while they would drop the finale in three sets to Hoxie 21-25, 25-21, 25-18. Hill City upended Hoxie in the second match of the day 25-18, 18-25, 25-20.

To open the day on Senior Night, the Lady Beavers fell behind Hill City in the first set by nine at 12-3. Scott City would slowly chip away, and got to within 18-13, and eventually 20-17. Trailing 22-18, the Lady Beavers found a way to take the set, leading for the first time at 24-23, before winning the set 25-23, closing the set on a 7-1 run. They led 7-3 early in the second set, when the Lady Ringnecks rallied and got the set tied at eight. Their big run would come midway through the second set, as they they would build a 15-12 lead on the heels of a 5-1 run. Scott City would crawl back to tie the set at 24, but Hill City picked up the final two points to force a third set at 26-24. It would be a close third set early, before the Lady Ringnecks used a 7-1 run to lead 14-8. They were able to push the lead to 20-13, before the Lady Beavers made a furious rally. Scott City closed the set and match with a 13-4 run to take a 26-24 third set victory. Kennedy Holstein had seven kills and an ace, while Brooke Hoeme had seven kills.

In the final match, the first set would see nine ties and four lead changes, and saw neither team lead by more than four points. Trailing 18-17, Scott City was able to run five straight to take a 22-18 lead. Hoxie rallied for three of the next four points to get to within 23-21. However, it would be the Lady Beavers finishing the opening set with two straight to win 25-21. To begin the second set, the Lady Indians started out on a tear, and opened up with the first six points, and led 11-2. Scott City battled back slowly, and scored four straight late in the second set to tie it at 21. Hoxie closed the set with four straight to force a third set, taking a 25-21 win. The Lady Indians started out hot once again in the third stet, leading 6-1. They never trailed in the final two sets, as the Lady Beavers were never able to get a rally going. Scott City was able to pull to within 22-18 late in the match, before Hoxie ended the match with three straight to win 25-18. Ella Rumford had seven kills and an ace for the Lady Beavers, while Kennedy Holstein had four kills and two block points in the loss.

Scott City is now 6-4 on the year, as they will play at Goodland on Monday in a triangular with Goodland and Lakin, and will host Colby and Hoxie next Thursday.
