Scott City volleyball sweeps Oakley triangular
Oakley, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–With all that’s been going on over the past several months, there’s no doubt that there was plenty of excitement for the Scott City Lady Beaver volleyball team to get back on the court, and to have a little normality. One thing that was normal for the Lady Beavers, was their triangular to open the season in Oakley on Friday, against the Lady Plainsmen and Wallace County.
In the end, it would be a pair of wins for Scott City, as they controlled Wallace County 25-13, 25-13, and after dropping their first set to Oakley 25-19, came back and dominated with 25-8, 25-13 wins in the final two sets.
Against Wallace County, who had one match under their belt, the Lady Beavers pulled away in the middle of the first set. After it was tied at six, Scott City used a 6-1 run to lead 12-7 at the midway point. The Lady Wildcats cut it to 14-9, before the Lady Beavers responded with an 11-4 run to shut the door on the opening set to win 25-13. Wallace County had a brief lead at 2-1 early in the second set, only to see Scott City rally for four straight and never look back. The Lady Wildcats pulled to within 8-6, when the Lady Beavers took control of the match for good. A 10-1 run put them up 17-7. It would go back and forth to close things out, as a 4-1 Scott City rally finished the second set and match 25-13. Kennedy Holstein had four aces and three kills in the match, while Paige Vulgamore, Brooklyn Zielke and Ella Rumford each had three kills. Six Lady Beavers recorded at least one kill.
Oakley would be the next foe for the Lady Beavers, and it would be a match that would go three sets. The Lady Plainsmen started out scoring the first six points, only to see Scott City rally to tie the opening set at six. There were seven lead changes and nine ties in the first set that went back and forth. Tied at 18, Oakley would take advantage of hitting errors by the Lady Beavers, and closed on a 7-1 run to take the opening set 25-19. That first set loss fired up Scott City, as they never trailed the rest of the night. They started out with the first four points of set two, only to see the Lady Plainsmen tie the set at four. After that, a pair of 10-1 runs finished off the second set in a convincing 25-8 win. Scott City only had three kills in the first set, but had 11 in the second. In the third, the Lady Beavers never let Oakley get going, and opened up with a 9-2 run. Scott City’s lead would be trimmed to 9-6, before a 6-1 opened it up to a 15-7 lead. The Lady Beavers had one more big run in them, using an 8-1 run to lead 24-10, and ended up with the 25-13 set three victory. Kennedy Holstein had six kills, while Paige Vulgamore had five, Alli Brunswig and Ella Rumford each had four kills. Alli Patton had four service aces.
