Scott City football gearing up for another big season
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Coming off an 8-3 season in 2019, the Scott City Beaver football team has been gearing up for the past couple weeks in preparation for the 2020 season. With the Coronavirus pandemic impacting schools statewide, teams were allowed to have their team camps a week before practices began. The Beavers took advantage of that, and are taking this week to the next level. Around 50 players make up the 2020 version of Scott City Football.
Last year saw a roller coaster of a year, as they saw their 10-year district championship streak come to an end, but made it to the Sectional round of the Class 3A State Playoffs, before falling to Cheney. What was kept in tack was their string of non-losing seasons, which is at 33 straight, and they’ve made 14 consecutive playoff appearances as well, winning at least one playoff game in 13 of the 14 straight years.
Scott City returns their offsenive line, which started 10 of 11 games together last year. Harrison King returns as quarterback, and has a 7-2 record over his last two seasons as the starter. There will be a whole new backfield behind King, while defensively, the Beavers return their secondary, and seven starters overall.
This year’s schedule has changed up a little bit from the past two seasons. They will play three league schools to open the season, and follow it up with five district games. One of those teams is Cimarron, who has joined the Great West Activities Conference, after being in the Hi-Plains League for nearly four decades. As Beloit and Concordia exit as district opponents, Southeast of Saline and Smoky Valley replace them, to go along with Colby, Goodland and Russell in the district. Southeast of Saline moves up to Class 3A, after having success in Class 2A over the past two seasons, while Smoky Valley is two years removed from a Sectional playoff appearance in Class 3A. Concordia moved over to a different district in 3A, while Beloit dropped to Class 2A.
