Yager to take the field one final time in annual Shrine Bowl
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Scott City has had many players and coaches selected to play or coach in the Shrine Bowl over the past four decades. They have continued their selection of players for the 47th Annual Kansas Shrine Bowl slated to kick off Saturday’s 7 pm kickoff at Hummer Sports Park in Topeka. Hunter Yager is continuing the tradition of former Beavers to play in the annual event, and is a second-generagion Yager to play in the Shrine Bowl. His father, James, played in the 1991 game, where the West won 44-29 over the East at KSU Stadium in Manhattan.
During his senior year, Hunter rushed for 800 yards, and had 350 receiving yards with 10 touchdowns on a team that went 8-3 in 2019. Defensively, Yager had over 100 tackles in his first year as a linebacker.
Yager is the 30th player from Scott City selected to play in the Shrine Bowl.
He will play linebacker for the West squad, and will wear jersey number 51.
After Saturday’s game, Yager will attend BYU-Idaho.
The head coach for the West squad is Tommy Beason from Goddard. Assistants include Wichita South’s Russ Wells, Erin Beck from Great Bend, Derek Tuttle from Andover Central, Cheney’s Shelby Wehrman, Lucas Melvin from Norton, and Sedgwick’s Jeff Werner.
Originally, the game was slated to be played at Yager Stadium in Topeka, on the campus of Washburn University. Since the campus is closed due to Covid-19, the game has been moved to Hummer Sports Park. Both the East and West teams are practicing in the Topeka area this week.
