GARDEN CITY, Kan. — Garden City Community College continues to monitor the changing landscape due to COVID-19. With that in mind, the college has created an action team, led by Director of Athletics, Greg McVey, at the direction of President, Dr. Ryan Ruda, in coordination with Head Athletic Trainer, David Jantz, Head Volleyball Coach, Patrick Hiltz, Head Football Coach, Tom Minnick, Campus Nurse, Trish Miller, Vice President and Assistant Athletic Director, Colin Lamb, Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Karla Armstrong, Sports Medicine Athletic Trainer Supervisor, Steve Barrett and Administrative Assistant, Ashley Rutti.

“Student-athlete safety and health are paramount,” McVey said in a statement. “I know everyone wants to get back to a sense of normalcy, but we have to be intelligent about our changing world. No decisions have been made by the NJCAA as it pertains to fall sports as of yet, but we will continue to make sure plans and contingencies are in place for the safe return of our student athletes.”

On Mar. 16, the NJCAA announced the cancelation of all spring sports due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They have since set a target date of June 15 to make a decision on the future of fall sports for the 2020 season. Along those same lines, they have introduced three options: start everything on time, a delayed start and the full cancellation of fall sports.

In the meantime, the action team is in the early stages of a reopening plan. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.
