GARDEN CITY, Kan. — The Garden City Community College Athletic Department announced on Monday that they have parted ways with Head Softball Coach, Becky Gundy.
“I wish Coach Gundy and her family all the best in the future,” Director of Athletics, Greg McVey said in a statement. “I appreciate the effort that she gave to Garden City Community College softball over the past several years.”
In her eight seasons guiding the Broncbusters, Gundy posted a 156-229 overall record (.405), while going 55-111 (.331) in conference play. Garden City had just one winning season during her tenure, finishing 34-27 in 2015. That year, the Broncbusters upset Butler in the Region VI semifinals before falling to Barton in the Championship. She was named the Region Coach of the Year.
But following 2015, Garden City posted five straight losing seasons, including an 8-40 injury-plagued campaign in 2016-the fewest wins in program history. They dropped 33 straight conference games before snapping that streak with a 5-4 win over Pratt on Apr. 3, 2017. In fact, Garden City won 20 games just once over Gundy’s final five seasons, finishing in the bottom two in the Jayhawk West four times in the last five years.
The College will begin a national search immediately.
