Scott City girls outlast Goodland in overtime
Cimarron, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Playing for a trip to state, two GWAC foes met up for a fourth time this season Saturday night at Cimmaron for a chance to head to the Class 3A State Tournament in Hutchinson next Thursday. For the second time in nine days, Goodland and Scott City would play an extra four minutes. The Cowgirls would win the first overtime game 49-46. This time it would be different. The Lady Beavers would outscore Goodland 9-0 in overtime to punch their ticket to state for the fourth straight year in a 54-45 win in their fourth overtime game of the season.
Goodland would have a pair of early leads, but a 14-0 run over a six and a half minute span would give Scott City a 21-10 lead with 6:06 left in the second quarter. The Cowgirls would trail by 12 with 3:55 left in the half at 24-12, before they would make a run. Scott City saw their lead dwindle to 24-17 a minute later, then push it up to 28-17 with 44.7 seconds left before recess. Goodland connected on a four-point play, and had a banked half court shot to close the final 35 seconds on a 7-1 run to get to within 29-24 at the break.
The Lady Beavers would score the first points of the half to lead 32-24 with 6:31 remaining in the third period, only to see the Cowgirls use a 9-1 run to pull to within 33-32 with 1:22 left in the third stanza. Scott City (20-3) used a 7-2 run to take a 40-34 lead into the fourth quarter.
After the Lady Beavers led 42-36 with 6:15 left, Goodland (12-11) would make their run of 9-2, and took the lead with 1:37 left at 45-44 on a Talexa Weeter three-point play. Emily Weathers would hit one of two free throws six seconds later to tie the game at 45. The Cowgirls would hold the ball for the final shot, but a mid range jumper was too strong, and the teams would play four more minutes.
It was all Scott City in overtime, as they took the lead with 2:21 left on a Weathers basket to go in the extra session. The Lady Beavers would go on to hit seven of eight free throws to take the 54-45 win, and advance to state for a fourth consecutive season.
Saturday’s game would be tied four times and the lead was exchanged four times.
Emily Weathers led the way for Scott City with 19 points, and Lyndi Rumford added 10. The Lady Beavers went 19-24 from the free throw line, and finished with 16 turnovers. They went 19-24 from the foul line. Goodland was led by Talexa Weeter’s 18 points, while Emma Lehman added 10. The Cowgirls went 10-13 from the free throw line and had 16 turnovers. Scott City won the rebounding edge 23-21.
With the win, Scott City has won 20 games in a season for the first time in program history. They also improved to 2-2 in overtime games this year. While Goodland leads the series 5-3 in the postseason, the Lady Beavers lead the series 27-26 since 1985. Scott City has won two straight in sub-state against the Cowgirls. The senior class for the Lady Beavers went 11-0 in sub-state play in their career, and are a part of all four state tournament appearances in school history.
In the boys sub-state game, Colby’s Ryan Myers banked in a three pointer as time expired, sending the Eagles to state for the first time since 2008, with a 48-47 win over Lakin. Lakin ends their year at 18-5, and Colby improves to 16-7.

Scott City will play in the Hutchinson Sports Arena in the Class 3A State Tournament. The girls quarterfinals will be on Thursday. The Lady Beavers will be anywhere from a three to a six seed. Four teams carry a 20-3 mark into state. Nemaha Central is the lone unbeaten team at 23-0, Frontenac is 21-2, Jefferson West is 14-9 and Osage City is 13-10. Halstead, Phillipsburg, Cheney and Scott City are all 20-3.
