U.S. 54 expansion to begin in Seward County

Kansas Department of Transportation

Work is expected to begin the week of Jan. 6 on the U.S. 54 expansion in Seward County.  The current four-lane will be extended an additional three miles to the east with a second bridge constructed over the Cimarron River for westbound traffic and new rails installed on the existing bridge.  The U.S. 54 rest area, approximately 10 miles east of Liberal, has been closed permanently due to this project.

Crews will begin installing work zone warning signs with dirt work expected to begin by Jan. 10.  KDOT urges drivers to be alert and pay attention to work zone warning signs.

Koss Construction Company of Topeka is the contractor on this $27.6 million project which is expected to be completed during summer 2022.
