Scott City sweeps GWAC quadrangular

Holcomb, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Thursday’s GWAC quadrangular would be the final day where teams could jockey for seeding for the upcoming GWAC tournament to be held on Saturday, October 19 in Colby. Three of the four teams came in undefeated, as Colby was at 3-0, while Holcomb and Scott City entered at 2-0 in league play. 

The competition was solid with the four teams that played, with three of the five matches finishing in three sets. Scott City would come out at 3-0 on the day, while Colby was 1-1, Holcomb 1-2 and Goodland 0-2. Colby and Goodland only played two matches, since they had already played three league matches earlier.

Scott City’s first match of the afternoon put them up against Colby. It was round three between the two teams, as Scott City had knocked off the Lady Eagles in three sets the previous two meetings. Colby had the edge in the first set at 24-17, before the Lady Beavers made a furious comeback, and closed the set on a 10-1 run to win 27-25. In set two, Scott City and Colby would be competitive, with the Lady Beavers leading for a majority of the way, before they picked up a 25-20 win.

In their next match, Scott City faced the Goodland Cowgirls, who had been playing some of their best volleyball in recent days. The Cowgirls came off a three-set loss to Holcomb, and would push the Lady Beavers in the first set in a back and forth set. Scott City would have just enough, taking a 25-21 win. The Lady Beavers would pull away about midway through the second set and take a 25-13 win.

The finale featured two rivals, who have had some good battles over the years. This one was no exception. To no surprise, Holcomb and Scott City would go to three sets. The Lady Beavers would take the first set 25-20. They had several match points in the second set, only to see the Lady Longhorns rally, and have two set points. After going back and forth for a while in extra points, Holcomb would win a marathon set 33-31 in a thriller. Scott City would jump out to a 7-2 lead early in the third set, and build their lead to 22-12. The Lady Longhorns battled back to within five, before the Lady Beaver finished things off with a 25-19 win.

Holcomb won their match against Goodland 21-25, 25-16, 25-14, and would drop a three-set match to Colby 19-25, 25-22, 25-14. 

With five matches complete for each team, Scott City is at 5-0, Colby 4-1, Holcomb 3-2, Goodland, Hugoton and Ulysses each at 1-4.

Holcomb is now 19-11 and will be at Lamar, CO for a dual on Tuesday, while Scott City will host their own invitational on Saturday, and will take a 20-2 record into it. Colby is now 19-10 and will host a triangular on Tuesday. Goodland is 13-15 on the season, and hosts its own triangular on Tuesday.
