Beavers shut out Russell

Russell, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Playing in their third straight road game, the Scott City Beavers made the trek to Russell to face the Broncos in a matchup of teams seeing their seasons go in the opposite direction. While the Beavers had some self-inflicted mistakes to end drives, they were persistent in controlling the game and field position in a 41-0 win to improve to 5-0 on the year.

The wind would play a big factor with field position in the first quarter. Scott City would only snap the ball once in their own territory. Taking over at the Bronco 30 on their second series, a four-play, 30-yard drive would be capped off with a Parker Gooden two-yard run with 5:23 left in the first quarter to go up 7-0 with the Alexis Reyes extra point. The Beavers would take advantage of short field once again after a short punt. A five-play, 25-yard drive would see Brandon Winderlin finish it off with a two-yard run with 2:30 remaining in the opening frame to go up 14-0 with the Reyes PAT.

Scott City scored just once in the second quarter, after a pair of turnover on downs. A 36-yard drive on seven plays would see Cale Goodman punch it in from one yard out to go up 21-0 over the Broncos with 33 seconds left in the first half. That would begin a series of four straight scores for Scott City.

Their opening drive in the second half would go nine plays, 48 yards in 3:41, as Hunter Yager scored from eight yards out to give the Beavers a 27-0 lead. The extra point was missed. Scott City converted two fourth downs on that drive. They would add another touchdown late in the third period, as Goodman scored for the second time from a yard out with 1:58 left in the third stanza to increase the lead to 34-0 with the Reyes extra point.

In the final period, the Beavers put together a 12-play, 55-yard drive in just over five minutes, as Winderlin would finish the drive off with a one-yard run with 6:49 left to go up 41-0 after the Reyes kick.

Scott City finished with 437 yards of offense, with 260 coming on the ground. Hunter Yager led a balanced attack with 71 yards on nine carries and a touchdown, while Brandon Winderlin had 65 yards on nine carries and two touchdowns, Parker Gooden had 59 yards on six carries and a touchdown, and Cale Goodman rushed 11 times for 54 yards with two touchdowns. Harrison King was 11-15 passing for 158 yards, as Parker Gooden was the leading receiver with 53 yards on three receptions. Lawson Bailey threw for the other 19 yards on one reception.

Russell had just 40 yards of offense. Jacob Sohm threw for 49 yards on 3-10 passing with two interceptions. Ceaonte Wilson had six yards on nine carries, as the Broncos finished with minus-nine yards rushing.

With the win, Scott City improves to 4-0 all time against Russell, and are now 9-2 against NCAA teams. It was their 35th consecutive district win since October, 2008, and they clinched their 33rd straight non-losing season. The Beaver defense has not allowed an offensive touchdown through the first five games, the first since 1984, when they did not allow a point through the first six games.

Scott City is 5-0 on the year, and will host Beloit for homecoming next Friday night. The Trojans are 3-2 on the year, and 1-1 in district play, after a 46-12 win over Goodland on Friday. Russell is 0-5, and will face their fourth unbeaten team in their first six games next Friday, when they face off against 5-0 Colby, who held on for a 21-14 win at Concordia.
