SCHS cross country, girls tennis and volleyball with a busy weekend

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It was a busy weekend for the SCHS athletic department, as the cross country teams ran at Rim Rock Farm outside of Lawrence, tennis was at the Garden City Invitational, and volleyball was in Kinsley for a triangular.

For cross country, the boys finished ninth out of 43 teams in the “Blue Race”. Eric Frances led the way with a 14th place finish with a time of 17:36, while Jaxson Kough was their second medalist, finishing in 20th with a time of 17:45. Roberto Apodaca was 55th (18:35), Eric Shapland 116th (19:21), Freddie Castillo 152nd (19:52), and Henry Aguilar 199th (20:26). There were 311 runners in the race. The Lady Beavers were down a couple of runners, but put in a great effort. As a team, they were 17th out of 32 teams. Megan Vance was the lone medalist, placing fifth with a time of 20:26. Kairae Berry came in 68th (23:06), Samantha Aguilar 145th (25:03), Alivia Noll was 143rd (25:11) and Claire Rumford finished in 159th (25:22). There were 240 girls in the race. Scott City will run at the Ness City Invitational on Thursday. 

The girls tennis team had a great day on Saturday at the Garden City Invitational, placing fourth as a team. Great Bend would win the tiebreaker over Colby to win the meet, as they both had 32 points, and Garden City was third with 30 points. The Lady Beavers had 27 points. Abbie LeBeau won the No. 1 Singles division for Scott City, while Cynthia Gonzalez was third at No. 2 Singles. The No. 2 Doubles team of Sadie Hermosillo/Bella Myers placed third and the No. 1 Doubles team of Lanae Haupt/Madison Westergard went 1-3. They will be at the Ellsworth Invitational on Thursday.

Playing in their second competition in three days, the Scott City volleyball team went to Kinsley to compete in a triangular. After sweeping LaCrosse in three sets on Thursday in their dual, they would knock off the Lady Coyotes 25-20, 25-17, and defeat Southwestern Heights 25-14, 25-8. Scott City is now 15-2 on the year, and will be in Hugoton on Thursday, facing Hugoton and Ulysses in a GWAC Triangular.
