Scott City boys dominate 3A Regional; several area athletes punch ticket to state

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–With one less day than expected to prepare for regionals, 16 schools made their way to Scott City to compete in the Class 3A Regional at Darner Field. Thursday’s meet would be filled with surprises, both good and bad. Despite a lightning delay in the late afternoon hours, the competition held up to its billing in front of a near-capacity crowd on both sides of the track.

In the end, Scott City’s boys would repeat as regional champions, their third in the last four years, while Norton would nudge MCL-rivals Phillipsburg and TMP-Marian for the girls title.

The Beaver boys team was dominant, winning by 64 points over runner-up Beloit. Scott City won nine of the 18 events, including a sweep of the relays, and qualified at least one participant in 14 events. Jack Thomas and Marshall Faurot would each win two individual events, and qualified in three, while Kaden Wren and Brandon Winderlin qualified in four events, including two individual. Wyatt Hayes and Isaac Tarango qualified in three events.

An unfortunate thing took place during the 4x100M Relay on the boys side. Holcomb junior Isaiah Armstrong would pull a hamstring on the anchor leg, and would be unable to run the 400M Dash and 200M Dash. He was the favorite to win those races, and had run the best time in Class 3A in the 400M Dash last week with a 48.4. Colby’s Jordan Schippers, who had qualified three times in the 100M Dash and was the defending state champion in the 200M Dash, failed to qualify in those events.

Scott City’s girls were the top area team, finishing in fourth place. They were led by senior Ducle Ayala, who qualified for three events.

Cimarron also found some success, as Seth Ridenour is a two-time regional champion in the 100M Dash, and Clara Bartlett and Jacee Wilson qualified in two events, and were individual regional champions in one event each.

The top four placers qualified for the Class 3A State Track & Field Championships at Cessna Stadium in Wichita next Friday & Saturday, May 24-25.
