Scott City’s Cupp 10th at state tennis
Prairie Village, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Scott City’s lone state qualifier had himself a good weekend at the Class 3-2-1A State Tennis meet on Friday and Saturday.
William Cupp placed 10th in Singles over the two-day tournament.
On day one, he started his day off with a win over Garrett Robinson of Conway Springs 6-3, 6-2, and fell to eventual third place finisher William Weiner of Sterling 6-0, 6-0. On the backside, Cupp won 9-1 over Peter Westbrook of Bishop Seabury Academy. In the match to guarantee a top 12 finish, he would defeat Luke Bellar of Conway Springs 9-6.
After a lengthy delay on Saturday, Cupp started out against Logan Gamble of Hesston. He would fall to the eventual fifth place finisher 9-1. Cupp bounced back to advance to the ninth place match with a 9-4 win over Grayson Rader of Bishop Seabury Academy, and would fall to Wichita Collegiate’s Charlie Dunne 9-2 in the ninth place match.
Cupp’s completed his second straight state tournament appearance, and finished the season 29-9. Most of his nine losses came to the state runner-up, the third-place, fourth place, fifth place and ninth place finishers in the Class 3-2-1A State Meet.
Scott City as a team would tie for 12th place with Larned with six points. Wichita Collegiate won the team title with 39 points, edging out host Kansas City Christian, who had 37 points, and Smoky Valley finished third with 24 points.
