NSF Robert Noyce Scholarship Awarded to GCCC Student, Cayla Steinert

GARDEN CITY, Kan. — Garden City Community College student, Cayla Steinert has been selected as a recipient of the 2019-2020 National Science Foundation (NSF) Robert Noyce Scholarship from Fort Hays State University.  The scholarship provides Cayla with $13,000 to attend Fort Hays State University to receive a STEM Education Degree, a scholarship that is renewable for a second year.  STEM qualifying majors at FHSU include physics, chemistry, biology, geosciences, or mathematics.  Cayla is currently studying biology. 

The Department of Math and Science at GCCC will be hosting a Signing Party for Cayla in the Fous Lecture Hall at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 29. 

The Noyce Teacher Leader program was established to prepare individuals to become exceptional science or mathematics instructors in service areas with high needs.  Recipients of the Noyce scholarship agree to focus on specialized coursework for teaching using distance learning technologies, leadership, and professional development specific to high-needs schools.  Recipients of the scholarship are also provided with resources for undergraduate research experiences, conferences, and support for transitioning from student to teacher.  Seven NSF Robert Noyce Scholarships are available each year.  For more information about this scholarship, visit https://www.fhsu.edu/smei/noyce/.
