Scott City baseball sweeps Goodland

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Scott City baseball team is enjoying one of their longest winning streaks in quite some time, as they were able to pick up a pair of road games Tuesday afternoon in Goodland, with wins of 11-0 in five innings and 6-1 in game two.

In game one, the Beavers scored runs in four of their five at bats, plating a run in the first and second inning, before opening the game up with five runs in the fourth and four in the fifth to pick up the win. Blaine Culp would drive in four runs in the first game for Scott City. The Beavers had five hits, while limiting the Cowboys to one hit. Harrison King went all five innings, giving up just one hit and had six strikeouts in the game, while throwing 76 pitches. Scott City took advantage of five Goodland errors.

In game two, it was a closer game throughout, as the Beavers would eventually pull away in the late innings to secure a 6-1 victory. The game would be scoreless through two innings, before Scott City would score the first run of the game in the third to lead 1-0 through three innings. They would go on to add two in the fourth and pull away with a three-run sixth inning. Goodland’s lone run came in the seventh inning. Kevin Herman went all seven innings, giving up a run on three hits while recording 10 strikeouts. He threw 96 pitches. Harrison King and Jeffrey Nix would have one hit and an RBI in the game, as the Beavers outhit the Cowboys 5-3.

With the wins, Scott City improves to 9-7 overall, and 5-3 in GWAC play. This is the first time the Beavers have won nine games in a season since 2013. Goodland falls to 3-9 overall and 1-7 in league play.

Scott City sits one-half a game behind Ulysses in third place in the league standings. The Tigers fell to Hugoton in the first game, before their second game was rained out. Colby has clinched at least a share of the GWAC crown with their sweep of Holcomb.

Up next for Scott City is a doubleheader at Syracuse on Thursday, before hosing Holcomb to wrap up the regular season next Tuesday. Goodland travels to Wray on Thursday, and will play face Hugoton next Tuesday.
