GCHS softball routes Colby; improves to 10-0

GARDEN CITY, Kan. — The Garden City High School softball team continued their undefeated season Thursday, sweeping the visiting Colby Eagles in a double-header 15-0 and 14-4.

Garden City jumped on Colby early in game one scoring six runs in the first inning and nine in the third to run-rule Colby after just three innings. The Buffaloes had nine hits in 20 at-bats in game one including a three-run triple by Kelbi Richter in the first.

Garden City’s Yazmin Vargas got the victory striking out seven in three innings pitched and giving up no hits. Colby’s Kamrie Miller picked up the loss giving up seven earned runs and nine hits while walking six.

The second game was a rough start for the Buffaloes as Colby jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning in part thanks to errors by Garden City’s defense. Colby would continue to offensive attack in the second innings scoring two more runs to lead 4-0 going into the bottom of  the third.

Garden City’s offense would pick things up scoring 14 runs over the next four innings to run-rule Colby after six innings. Yazmin Vargas went 2-4 with 4 RBIs which included an in-the-park home run. Hailey Dart went 3-5 at the plate in game two with a single and two doubles including three RBIs.

Vargas picked up the win in game two again going six innings, giving up two hits and one earned run including 11 strikeouts. Colby’s Kamrie Miller picked up the loss giving up nine earned runs and five walks in 5.2 innings.

Garden City moves to 10-0 on the season and will be on the road to take on Derby and Ark City next Tuesday. Colby moves to 9-3 on the year.
