Scott City baseball sweeps Lakin

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Even though Scott City split a doubleheader on Tuesday at Ulysses, you could tell that the young squad gained some confidence. That transferred over into Thursday’s home doubleheader with Lakin. They would rally for the final 31 runs in the double header, taking the first game 16-5 in five innings, and finished the second game in four innings with a 15-0 win.

Scott City 16, Lakin 5, Game 1 (5 Innings)
Lakin would score the first five runs, with two in the first and three in the second to take a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the second inning. Scott City responded with a four-run inning to pull to within 5-4. After both teams were scoreless in the third, the Beavers took the lead for good in the fourth inning with 12 runs, and shut out the Broncs in the fifth to take the first game 16-5.

Kevin Herman had two hits and drove in three runs, while Harrison King and Jeffrey Nix had two RBI each, and Ryan Cure had three hits. Scott City finished with nine hits. Ronnie Weathers pitched in the final four innings and picked up the win, giving up an earned run on two hits and three strikeouts. Harrison King pitched an inning-plus, allowing four runs on two hits. Matt Morgan surrendered nine unearned runs in an inning and two thirds, allowing four hits for Lakin. Braden Fisher had two hits with three RBI for the Broncs.

Much like the first game, the damage the Beavers did came in three of the four innings at bat. This time around, they never gave up a run. Scott City raced out to a 3-0 lead after one inning 8-0 after two innings, and after a scoreless third, scored seven runs in the fourth to force the game to end early with a 15-0 win.

Kevin Herman had three hits and drove in six runs in the win, while Easton Lorg had three hits and scored three runs for the Beavers, who finished with 10 hits. Herman scattered two hits and struck out eight in four innings in his first start of the season. Jace Bachman took the loss for the Broncs, going three-plus innings, allowing 12 runs, eight earned, on eight hits.

With the win, Scott City went 3-1 this week, and improved to 3-5 on the year, as they host Colby on Tuesday in a GWAC doubleheader. Lakin falls to 4-4 on the season, and faces Elkhart on Monday.
