GCHS to present the musical Evita

Garden City High School drama department will present the musical Evita, March 1st and 2nd at 7:00 p.m., and March 2nd and 3rd at 2:30 p.m. The performances will be held in the auditorium on the Garden City High School campus, 2720 Buffalo Way Blvd. This production contains language and content that might not be appropriate for all audiences, parental guidance and discretion is suggested.
Ticket prices are $10 for adults and $5 for students. Tickets may be purchased at www.gchsdrama.booktix.com or at the door on the night of the performance. The box office opens an hour prior to production, and cash, checks and credit/debit cards are accepted.
GCHS Drama students will be selling merchandise at the door for Evita including light up roses for $5, Eva Peron postcard/Break a Leg Notes for $1, and Argentinian flags for $1. They will also have Hamlet t-shirts for $12 and Hamlet stickers for $1 to help support the production of Hamlet that will be staged at the International Festival in June. Checks and cash can only be accepted for merchandise.
Evita charts the young and ambitious Eva Peron’s meteoric rise to sainthood. Set in Argentina between 1934-1952, the Tony-winning musical follows Eva Duarte on her journey from poor illegitimate child to ambitious actress to, as wife of military leader-turned-president Juan Peron, the most powerful woman in Latin America, before her death from cancer at age 33. The events in Evita’s life are presented in song and commented on by the show’s narrator, Che. Well-known numbers from Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical masterpiece include “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina,” “Oh What a Circus,” “Buenos Aires” and “Another Suitcase in Another Hall.” (www.themusicalcompany.com)
Evita will be adjudicated for Music Theatre of Wichita’s Jester Awards. Nominations will be announced in April with the award ceremony held at Century II on May 5th. Last year GCHS was nominated for 18 Jester Awards for the production of In the Heights, and received ten Jester Awards. Since GCHS began competing in the Jester Awards five years ago, the program has received over 50 nominations and has been awarded with twenty-two Jesters including two overall production awards for Seussical and In the Heights.
