LIBERAL, Kan. — Bridges connect us, help us understand each other. This year’s Cinco de Mayo theme “Building Bridges in Liberal, Kansas” focuses on building bridges between local communities through collaboration. Using food, music and art as an avenue to discuss, recognize and celebrate our differences and the need to come together.

Members from the Cinco de Mayo committee are working diligently to provide an authentic, rich experience for the celebration. The annual Cinco de Mayo Fiesta in Liberal, Kansas not only honors the 1862 victory of the Mexican Army over the French at the Battle of Puebla, but it champions our community’s spirit and diversity. Our mission is to promote acceptance, dignity and social inclusion. It’s a day we can all come together as an inclusive community and respect cultural differences,” said Janeth Vazquez, Cinco de Mayo President.

The Cinco de Mayo Fiesta is one of the largest cultural events in Southwest Kansas. The celebration will kick off at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 4 with the Queen Pageant held at the James Maskus Auditorium. Other community activities will take place on Sunday, May 5. These include the Cinco de Mayo Parade, jalapeno eating contest, professional dance performances, screaming contest, live music, food, and much more.

The Cinco de Mayo event is being produced by the Cinco de Mayo Committee. Booths and sponsorship opportunities are still available. For further information, please contact Janeth Vazquez at 620-655-0408.
