17 year old killed, three men arrested in Finney County shootings
Garden City, KS(westernkansasnews.com) Three men have been arrested in two separate Sunday morning shootings in Finney County. One of which claimed the life of a teenager, according to two press releases from Finney County Sherriff Kevin Bascue.
The first shooting happened at 1:40 a.m. in the 1600 block of West Highway 50. Somewhere between N. 3rd Street and Campus Drive. Deputies were advised that someone from another vehicle had shot at another vehicle while traveling eastbound on highway 50. Deputies were dispatched to meet with Garden City Police Officers in the 2000 block of N. 3rd Street as the victim vehicle had stopped at that location due to officers at that location. the 17 year old boy was pronounced dead at St. Catherine Hospital.
At 3 p.m. Sunday the Garden City/Finney County Swat team with assistance from Dodge City and Ford County executed a search warrant at 1410 B street to locate suspects of the shooting. At this location, 21 year old Anthony Chavez of Garden City and 20 year old
Andres Chavez, were taken into custody and taken to the Finney County Jail and lodged on one count each of first degree murder. Further investigation is pending. No further info at this time.
The second incident happened at 5;25 a.m. when deputies were sent to 2515 W. Jones, Garden City in reference to a shooting that had just occurred. Upon arrival deputies found 35 year old Daniel Matinez of Midland, TX suffering from a gunshot wound to the stomach. He was taken to St. Catherine and treated.
While on scene, deputies were advised by witnesses who the suspect was and vehicle description. As deputies were on the scene, the suspect vehicle passed by and a deputy
attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle. The vehicle did not stop as the vehicle and deputy continued west on Jones Ave. from the location of the shooting. In the area of w. Jones approx. 1 mile west of Holcomb, the suspect began shooting out his back window at the pursuing deputy. Multiple rounds were fired. The suspect vehicle continued west to
Holcomb and then south on Holcomb Main Street towards River Road. The deputy continued pursuit as they then continued westbound on River Road.
The suspect then drove off the roadway in the 10,000 block of West River Road on the south side. The suspect vehicle continued west through pastures and fields. The Deputy continued to follow the suspect vehicle from River Road until the suspect vehicle came to a stop on the east side of the Klotz Sand Pit. The suspect fled his vehicle into the sand pit. Deputies with assistance from Garden City Police Department, Kansas Highway Patrol, and the Kearney County Sheriff’s Office set up a perimeter around the sand pit.
At approx. 2:15 p.m. Jeovany Valles-Leyva, 37, was taken into custody by the KHP SWAT team. He was transported to the Finney County jail and lodged. At this time he is lodged on one count of Attempted Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer. Charges are pending in
reference to the earlier shooting of Mr. Martinez.
It was also reported yesterday of a second gunshot victim from this incident. 35 year old Carolina Calvario, 210 Emerson Street, Garden City, arrived at St. Catherines Hospital sometime on Sunday with a gunshot wound to her leg. Ms. Calvario has been uncooperative to law enforcement at this time and it is unsure of where this incident occurred, or if it is related to the shooting at 2515 W. Jones. This matter continues to be under investigation.
