Scott City baseball splits with Lakin, SW Heights

Lakin, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Playing in a rescheduled triangular in Lakin on Thursday, the Scott City baseball team got used to the regional site, as they faced two of the teams in the regional in Lakin and Southwestern Heights.

The first game went to the Broncs, with a 7-1 win over Scott City, while the Beavers were able to bounce back for a 13-3 win in six innings over Southwestern Heights.

In the game with Lakin, the Broncs put up three first inning runs, and added two in the second and third innings to go up 7-0. Scott City scored in the fifth inning. Khai Hernandez and Logan Gugelmeyer drove in two runs each for Lakin, who finished with eight hits in the game. Gugelmeyer went all seven innings, allowing a run on three hits and struck out 12. For Scott City, Zach Carson drove in the lone run, as Kevin Herman scored. Herman took the loss, going 2 2/3 innings, giving up seven runs, only two earned, on five hits, with five strikeouts. Aaron Hoopes went the final 3 1/3 innings.

The Beavers bounced back in their final game. After Southwestern Heights led 1-0 heading into the bottom of the second, Scott City erupted for nine runs, and never looked back. They added two more runs in the third, and a run in the fifth and sixth innings. The Mustangs scored a run in the third and fifth innings. Kevin Herman, Harrison King and Zach Carson each drove in two runs for Scott City, as they finished with six hits in the game. Brady Herman got the win, going 3 1/3 innings, allowing a run on two hits, while Harrison King went 2 1/3 innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on three hits. Parker Jantz had two hits and drove in two runs for the Mustangs. Jantz also went 2 1/3 innings on the mound and took the loss, allowing 10 runs, one earned, on four hits. Sergio Puentez went three innings, giving up three runs on three hits. Southwestern Heights is in their inaugural season of baseball.

Lakn defeated Southwestern Heights in the other game 7-1.

All three teams will play in the Lakin regional on Monday in Lakin. Scott City is 7-9 on the year, and takes on Goodland at 3:30 on Monday. Southwestern Heights is 8-12 on the season, and faces Colby on Monday at 2, and Lakin is 17-3 on the year, and faces Cimarron at 5 on Monday in Lakin.
