Scott City softball sweeps Colby

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–This years spring sports season has been one of attempting to dodge wind, rain, snow and cold temperatures. Friday’s doubleheader for Scott City at home was the nicest day of the year for softball, and the Lady Beavers were able to take advantage of that. Not only was it a big GWAC doubleheader, but it was a doubleheader of teams that could face off in regionals in less than three weeks. In the end, Scott City was able to take advantage of Colby errors to win 12-3 in game one, and complete the sweep in game two with an 11-5 victory.

Colby would score the first run of the game on a Chloe Imhoff single in the top of the first inning, that scored Paige Schroer to make it 1-0 Lady Eagles after a half an inning. In the bottom of the first, Scott City responded with a Macie Price two-run single that scored Lyndi Rumford and Kaitlyn Roberts to make 2-1 Lady Beavers. The scoring would subside until the bottom of the fourth inning, where the Scott City opened the game up. Kaitlyn Wolkensdorfer drove in Gabby Martinez on a groundout, followed by an RBI single by Bailey Latta, and a Colby error on a popup that scored two more runs to make it 6-1. The Lady Beavers scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 8-1. Colby added two runs in the sixth, capped off by a Brielle Bange single that drove in Kennedy Stanley to cut the margin to 8-3. In the bottom of the sixth, Rumford led the inning off with a solo home run over the left field fence, her first of the year, as well as Scott City’s to push the lead to 9-3. The Lady Beavers added two more runs and held Colby scoreless to take the first game 12-3.

Scott City had 12 hits in the game, with four players collecting two hits each. Macie Price and Kaitlyn Wolkensdorfer had two RBI each. Kaitlyn Roberts got the win, going all seven innings, allowing three runs, one earned, on nine hits, and had six strikeouts. Colby’s Kamrie Miller went all six innings, allowing 12 runs, three earned, on 12 hits with three strikeouts. Paige Schroer and Chloe Imhof had two hits each for the Lady Eagles. Colby had six errors to Scott City’s three.

The finale was full of errors for both sides, as few runs were earned combined. Colby scored two unearned runs in the first inning. Scott City answered back with two unearned runs of their own in the bottom of the first to tie the game at two. They added another run on passed ball, as Amanda Lara scored to make it 3-2. It would be the third inning where the Lady Beavers would put the hammer down. A six-run inning started with a Kaitlin Roberts single scoring Lyndi Rumford, a Kally Kough two-run single scoring Macie Price and Lara, a Shelby Patton single scoring Kough, and a Bailey Latta RBI triple scoring Patton to make it 9-2 Scott City. After a scoreless fourth, Colby got a sacrifice fly by Kennedy Stanley that scored Chloe Imhoff from third to pull to within 9-3. The Lady Beavers got a two-run single from Gabby Martinez that scored Roberts and Rumford to make the score 11-3. Colby added another run in the seventh on a Scott City error, as the Lady Beavers were able to complete the sweep.

Lyndi Rumford went all seven innings, allowing four runs, one earned, on four hits. Amanda Lara and Shelby Patton each had two hits, and Gabby Martinez and Kally Kough each drove in two runs for Scott City. Kamrie Miller took the loss for Colby, giving up 11 runs, only two earned, on nine hits. Four players had one hit for the Lady Eagles. Colby had 12 errors in game two, while the Lady Beavers had six.

Scott City has now win six straight over Colby, and improved to 9-1 overall, 4-0 in GWAC play. They will have three doubleheaders on the road next week, starting with a trip to Ulysses on Tuesday. Colby dropped to 3-11 overall, 3-5 in GWAC play, and will face rival Goodland on Tuesday.
