Elliott leads locals on 2018 Shrine Bowl Roster

Garden City, KS-In 1993, James Elliott produced one of 20 best, single-season rushing marks in Garden City Community College history. More than two decades later, one of the most bruising backs the Broncbusters ever deployed got to sit back and watch his son etch his name into Garden City High School history.

On Wednesday, Buffaloes defensive lineman Demarcus Elliott along with Dodge City quarterback Dawson Williams and Holcomb wide receiver Chance Rodriguez were named to the 2018 Kansas Shrine Bowl team.

“I play with a chip on my shoulder to this day,” Elliott said. “It’s something that drives me. I feel that I’ve been overlooked, and I will continue to prove people wrong.”

Elliott tortured 6A quarterbacks and running backs, registering 81 tackles (18.5 for loss), 3.5 sacks, an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery during his senior campaign.

“It means a lot to be able to play one more high school football game,” Elliott said. “It’s a huge honor.”

Meantime, Rodriguez, enjoyed a breakout season for the Lonhorns, hauling in 50 balls for 801 yards and 14 touchdowns, helping Holcomb claim it’s second state championship in three years.

Williams was the Swiss army knife for Dodge City Coach Dave Foster, starting the season at quarterback, playing mostly at wide receiver, then returning to quarterback after an early-season injury to Beau Foster.

The 45th annual Kansas Shrine Bowl will be played at Carnie Smith Stadium in Pitsburg on July 28. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
