Red Demon boys route Guymon, girls fall at buzzer

Dodge City, KS(westernkansasnews.com) The Dodge City High School basketball teams split with Guymon Tuesday night at home. The boys handled Guymon 91-59, while the girls got beat at the buzzer 39-37.

The Red Demon boys got off to a sloppy start in the first half, but still led at halftime 42-34. Then in the second half Guymon could no longer keep up with Dodge City’s frenetic style of play. The Red Demons outscored the Tigers 49-25 in the second half.

Dodge City(2-3) had their best defensive effort of the season giving up just 59 points and held Guymon to 37 percent shooting from the field. The Tigers(0-6) also turned the ball over 32 times.

The Red Demons had five players score in double figures, led by Hunter Heath with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Noah Sowers and Adrian Mendoza each had 12 points, while Luke Gleason and Kaden Riekenberg both had 10 points. Everyone on Dodge City’s roster got to play in the blowout win.

The Dodge City girls fell to Guymon 39-37 at the buzzer as Johanna Quintero hit a lay-up. The Lady Red Demons led 37-35 with 30 seconds to play a offensive rebound and put back by Meagan Bellar tied the game at 37 then a turnover by Dodge City gave the Lady Tigers the ball back with 6.8 seconds left.

The Lady Red Demons fell behind trailing by as much as ten in the first half and trailed at halftime 18-11. Dodge City(3-2) responded in the third quarter outscoring Guymon(2-3) 15-6 and taking a 26-24 lead into the fourth quarter.

Dodge City struggled from the field shooting just 29 percent and were only 5-13 at the free-throw line. The Lady Red Demons were led by freshman Kisa Unruh with 14 points and 6 rebounds. Chidera Okoro had 9 points and 8 rebounds while Ezinne Okoro had 6 points and 10 rebounds.

Both Dodge City teams are back in action Friday January 5 when they take on Cimarron at United Wireless Arena.
