Buffalo Boys finish 2nd in Canyon TOC

Canyon, TX(westernkansasnews.com) The Garden City High School basketball teams played for the first time in the Tournament of Champions in Canyon, Texas on Friday and Saturday.

The boys finished the tournament with a record of 2-1 and finishing in second place as they lost in the Championship Game to El Paso Hanks 56-44. The Buffaloes advanced to the Championship game with wins on Friday over Abilene Cooper 43-26 and Canyon 41-32.

Demarcus Elliott led the way for Garden City scoring 35 points in three games and was named one of the two tournament MVP’s for the Buffaloes. Carlos Acosta was named the other MVP for Garden City scoring 22 points in three games.

The Lady Buffaloes didn’t fair as well as they went 0-3 in the tournament. Garden City lost to Canyon 68-20, Abilene Wylie 56-38 and Wall 39-26.

After struggling against Canyon, who won the tournament and has won four straight State Championships, the Lady Buffaloes were much more competitive in their last two games. Garden City trailed by 6 against Wylie entering the fourth quarter and trailed Wall by 11, but both games go away from the Lady Buffaloes late.

Josie Calzonnetti led Garden City in the tournament scoring 37 points in the three games.

Both Garden City teams are back in action Thursday night when they host Dumas in the start of the Clarion Inn Round-ball Classic. Pregame coverage will begin on ESPN 99.9 and Westernkansasnews.com at 5:45 p.m.
