GCCC teams finish shootout undefeated
Garden City, KS(westernkansasnews.com) Both Garden City Community College basketball teams finished the Broncbuster Shootout undefeated as both teams picked up wins on Saturday night.
The Broncbuster women beat Lamar Community College 58-53. GCCC led by 21 at the end of the third quarter, but Lamar stormed back in the fourth to make it interesting. The Lady Broncbusters(2-0) were able to hold off the rally to get the win.
Once again a balance effort led the way for GCCC as Garden City native led the way off the bench with 12 points. Daz’Monique Johnson had 12 points and 5 rebounds and Abigail Green had 11 points and 8 rebounds. The Broncbuster women’s defense shined again as they held Lamar to 32 percent shooting from the field.
The GCCC men fell behind by as much as 17 in the first half and trailed at halftime 42-31. The Broncbusters(3-0) were able to rally in the second half behind the play of Jamir Thomas who finished with 17 points in 19 minutes in the 79-76 win over Sunrise Christian.
Theo Holloway and Elvis Harvey also helped lead the way with 14 and 13 points each. The Broncbusters shot 53 percent from the field in the second half and 50 percent from the three-point line to help fuel the rally. Sunrise had a final shot to tie the game but KJ Fitzgerald’s shot at the buzzer missed off the right side of the rim.
Both teams are back in action on Tuesday night. The GCCC women will play at South Plains College in Texas at 5:30 p.m. The GCCC men will play at home at 7 p.m. against Kansas Wesleyan.
