TMP Marian wins Scott City Invitational; Scott City third
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The TMP Marian Lady Monarchs swept through the competition on Saturday at the Scott City Invitational. The biggest battle ended up going for second place between Scott City and the top team in Class 1A, DII in Wheatland/Grinnell. That was the first match in the day, and the Thunderhawks ended up winning in three sets. The Lady Beavers would bounce back after two tough losses early on to finish in third.
It was a revenge match to start the day for Scott City, who last Saturday at Oakley fell to Wheatland/Grinnell in the semi-finals in three sets. Like last week this one would go to three sets. The first set turned out to be a thriller. There were 15 ties, and seven lead changes, before the Lady Beavers prevailed 25-23. The Lady Thunderhawks would come out on a rampage in the second set, starting on a 9-1 run. Scott City would rally and pull to within 17-15 midway. They would also get to 21-19, before Wheatland/Grinnell closed the set on a 4-1 run. After the Lady Beavers scored the first two points of the third set, the Lady Thunderhawks went on an 11-1 run. Scott City would make a late 10-4 run to get to within 23-20, but the deficit proved to be too much to overcome in a 25-20 setback.
The second match of the day was against the No. 3 Ranked team in TMP Marian. Soctt City would put up a good fight, and led only once in the first set at 2-1. The Lady Monarchs used a 10-3 run to open up a 21-11 lead, before Scott City responded with 7-2 run to get to within 24-19, only to see TMP score the final point. TMP Marian would start the second set on a 9-2 run, and were never threatened leading by as many as 11, before winning 25-14 to complete the sweep.
Following a lengthy break, Scott City faced Norton in hopes to finally pick up their first win. It did take a little while, but they got the job done. The Lady Beavers trailed early, but used a 5-0 run to take a 6-3 lead. There would end up being eight ties and three lead changes. After the Lady Blue Jays took a 14-12 lead, Scott City responded with a 7-2 run and took a 21-16 lead, en route to a 25-19 win. Another slow start to a second set would plague the Lady Beavers early on. This time, it didn’t hurt them in the end. Norton jumped out to a 4-0 lead, only to see Scott City respond with an 11-1 run to take an 11-5 lead. It was pretty much cruise control for the rest of the set. The Lady Beavers lead by as many as nine at 20-11, and the Lady Blue Jays could only get to within six points after that big run. Scott City won the second set 25-17 for their first win of the day.
Up next was a matchup with the Lakin Lady Broncs. Scott City defeated them earlier this year in Goodland in straight sets, and would for the most part dominate the match. In the first set, the Lady Beavers used runs of 9-2 and 8-2 to pull away quickly with a 25-15 first set win. Lakin led briefly 1-0 for their only lead of that set. The Lady Beavers jumped out 6-2 early on, before Lakin stormed back to take an 11-9 lead. That would be the last that of the Lady Broncs in the match. Scott City stormed back with a 13-2 run, to take a 22-13 lead. Both teams would trade three straight points, and Scott City would prevail 25-16.
Their final match of the day would be against Oakley. Just like the first meeting, the Lady Beavers would dominate the match. Scott City trailed just once and were tied only twice. They would use a 7-2 run and a 9-4 run to go up 17-11, and ended up cruising to the 25-16 win. Their second set was tied briefly at one. After the Lady Plainsmen cut it to 5-4, Scott City poured it on, using a 13-3 run to lead 18-7, and finished the set and match with three straight to win 25-15.
