Summer preparation has Scott City Cross Country team excited for upcoming season

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–There’s no doubt that the end of the 2016 season for the Scott City cross country teams left a bitter taste in their mouths. Stepping up to Class 4A was an eye opener, as both teams failed to qualify for state for the first time in three seasons.

While numbers are slightly down for this year’s team, the optimism for the season seems high. It’s been a while since the cross country team has had as many upperclassmen as this year. Overall, 17 runners make up of the 2017 team.

Coach Kevin Reese saw his team put in the most work this summer. The Beavers return three individual state qualifiers from last year, including junior Jack Thomas, who was 8th in the state meet, senior Makaela Stevens who was 16th in 4A a year ago and 34th place finisher in junior Dulce Ayala.

The season begins Thursday, August 31 at Goodland.
