GCHS Students Place in FCCLA National Competition
Garden City, KS(westernkansasnews.com) Garden City High School Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) had two students attend the National FCCLA Conference July 2-7 in Nashville, Tennessee. The students competed in fashion design at the national competition.
Javier Cervantes, incoming senior, received 3rd in the nation in the occupational category Fashion Design event for his collection: Romeo & Juliet Couture. Javier designed costumes for the high school production of Romeo & Juliet and is currently designing for the upcoming production of Alice in Wonderland, December15-17. Javier also received 17 college callbacks and a perfect score at the International Thespian Festival for his Romeo & Juliet costumes. He plans to major in costume design.
Vicki Nugyen, graduated senior, received 4th in the nation in the occupational category Recycle & Redesign event with her project: Green With Envy. Vicki designed and sewed a dress using the unusual material of Maurices shopping bags and bottle caps. Vicki is attending Garden City Community College this fall.
Family Career and Community Leaders of America’s mission is to promote personal growth and leadership development through Family and Consumer Sciences education. Focusing on the multiple roles of family member, wage earner and community leader, members develop skills for life through: character development, creative and critical thinking, interpersonal communication, practical knowledge, and career preparation.
